This is long overdue.

A few weeks ago, a close friend of mine suggested the song “Same Love” by Macklemore. It was nothing what I was expecting: it was a hundred times better.

The rap and hip hop scene today is cluttered with sexism, raunchy lyrics, derogatory themes, homophobic slurs, and a dwindling amount of talent rapping about one of three things: money, women, or how awesome they are. It’s rare for something to become mainstream that rises above these characteristics, and even then the message is a passing fad: Drake’s YOLO trend, for example. And when was the last time you heard Jay-Z’s “Young Forever”? Jurassic 5 and Dave Matthews’ “Work It Out” has a positive message, but did that song even get one rotation on a radio station? I don’t believe so. So when Macklemore and Ryan Lewis came out with “Same Love,” it could not have come…
